Putting the heart in the Man of Steel

We are proud to announce that Maher is donating the metal to make the heart of the iconic Yorkshire Man of Steel.

The 30-metre high sculpture is to sit just off Junction 34 of the M1 and is a tribute to the generations of people who worked in the numerous factories and coal mines, forging the region's reputation over the years.  Local sculptor, Steve Mehdi, has planned the sculpture to be designed and fabricated locally, using a range of skills and materials including some donated by Maher.  The Man of Steel will be predominantly fabricated out of stainless steel and will sit on a coal black column which will include an observation deck, visitor centre and a shop.   Once up and running, the viewing platform and visitor centre will operate as a charitable trust, ploughing profits into the local community. Being 50% higher than Gateshead’s Angel of the North, it is estimated that it will be seen by 65 million people a year when it is positioned in 2016.

'The cost is significant but there is a huge sentimental reason for our involvement.  The company feels the sculpture mirrors exactly Maher's values and we absolutely believe it will be a celebrated part of the landscape for generations to come.' Says Donna Saul, Managing Director.
